Chilean Reciprocity fee

I will be traveling from Mendoza, stopping in Santiago, Chile for 10 hours, and then continuing on to Miami, Florida. If I check my bags all the way through from Mendoza to Miami, but want to spend 8 hours touring Santiago by private guide(i.e. exiting and entering the Santiago Airport), will I have to pay a Reciprocity fee since I am a U.S. citizen?

Yes, you would need to pay the fee if leaving the transit area of the airport. In order to leave the transit area of the airport you would need to go through passport control and for that you first have to pay the fee.

If you were to drive from Mendoza to Santiago you would not pay the fee at the border but since you arrive to SCL then you do pay it if you leave the transit area.

What is the cost of reciprocity fee for American citizens. Once I deplane can you please tell me where I go to pay this fee and do I need exact change (us dollars) or can I pay with a credit card. Thanks. Eleana

There are signs for where you must pay. You cannot pass migration control without having paid. The current cost is US$140. It can be paid with a credit card.

Hi Eleana62,

That is the same cost that we must pay for a visa to enter to the USA.

Blame it on the US government and not the Chilean...

The little known flip side is that there is no fee for that USA passport holder to apply for a residence or work visa once inside Chile.

I understand that if I enter Chile via land I don't have to pay the reciprocity fee but if I fly into Santiago, change planes and then on to another destination in Chile, will I have to pay the fee at that airport??
