Photo Ops

In addition to everything, what particular photo opportunities would you recommend in Santiago? I will be staying at Hotel Plaza de San Francisco for a week. I like architecture, landscape, animals, unusual people and happenings. Thanks.

Hehe - Walk downtown and you will have all the architecture you want. You'll only be about three big blocks from some cool stuff. Not much landscape or animals where you'll be, though the mounted police do have some pretty horses. You might look at Centro Mercado for people-watching (and a good lunch while you're at it). There also seems to often be various diversions such as musicians and clowns and such making their way around the downtown area.

Why other people don't ever seem to do this is beyond me, but check out the online newspapers for Santiago and whip out the old Google Translate to see if there are any particular events for locals that will be going on while you are there.

You'll find all you want at Cerro SanCristobal: great views, animal, people, architecture (in the surrounding streets), etc.

I'd also recommend the main cemetery. The wall with all the names on it is just one of the many amazing sights. Some of the crypts are works of art.

You can go on a daily Tours4tips walking tour which will show you the highlights and then you could continue to explore on your own.

I'd recommend La Vega Central, which is close to Mercado Central.
