LAN and Qantas codeshare. I took Qantas from Sydney but they have a short stopover at Auckland and change to LAN. Both are similar in standards.
I flew one way with Qantas and the other with LAN and thought Qantas had better customer service.
If you book with Qantas check carefully that it is a Qantas plane not a code share (or you will end up on an LAN plane anyway). The BIG bonus with Qantas is you go direct (but they don't fly every day) - LAN stop in Auckland.
Oops just re-read your post and realised you are flying from Brisbane.
In that case I would just pick whichever is quickest out of Bris-Auckland - Santiago or Bris-Syd-Santiago. The difference in airlines is not enough to make up for extra flying time :)
Well, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder, but having fought a 6 month battle to get a refund out of LAN, I would say book it with Qantas even if they are code sharing.
If things go wrong, with Qantas you're dealing with an Australian company and our consumer guidelines. With LAN, I had the fun of learning more spanish than I intended to through trying to read chilean consumer rights websites and receiving correspondence from them sent in spanish!
I can recommend Lan for the aircraft and customer service. Food in economy is far better than most airlines. Business class is also very good. I travel the route AKL/SCL fairly often and often find it cheaper to book the flight on the Qantas website even though, in reality, it's always a Lan flight.
I would book the flight on the Qantas website as if there are any issues to deal with at least you are dealing with an Australian based entity where English is a first language.
I flew one leg on each as well, even though I booked both with Qantas. If you decide to go the option of flying down to Sydney make sure it is a day when Qantas flies direct to Santiago otherwise you have another change of plane in Auckland. If it is not a direct flight from Sydney you may as well go straight from Brisbane to Auckland and have only the one change.
Likewise coming home if it is not the direct Qantas flight back to Sydney you may as well change in Auckland and come direct to Brisbane thus only having one change of plane.
I could not really say which airline offered the best service. One thing you might like to consider is that LAN flies an Airbus340 on the route whereas on the direct flight Qantas flies the Boeing747. If you are a couple the LAN option might be better as the seat configuration puts only 2 seats on the window sides where as the 747 has 3 seats.
