Quito Hotel/Iterinary suggestions

we are thankful for this forum.

We are a family of 2 adults + 2 kids arriving in EC on Dec. 10th 10pm.

We wanted to leave to the Galapagos on Dec. 11th first flight. Is there a safe/inexpensive hotel close to the airport?

Or would you suggest a day in Quito before we head to Galapagos on Dec. 12th.

We stay in Galapagos for 5 nights.

Then after the Galapagos trip, we have 3 days.

Would you suggest heading to Otovalo, staying a night there?

Then a day for Quito for the historiuc area and the Equator museum?

Our kids are real interested in seeing a volcano - which one, where?

Deeply thankful or any tips that may be provided here.

Thanks.

If you are arriving in Guayaquil, the Sheraton Four Points is a decent place, good price, and very close to the airport. They'll pick you up too, which is a good point to consider if you are arriving late at night with two kids.

If you are arriving in Quito - I'll defer to others who are more familiar with the hotels in that city.

Definitely you should visit Otavalo.

On a good day you can see volcanoes from Quito - if you are taking off from Quito airport you should get a good view if the sky is clear. On a flight from Quito to Cuenca once we flew right over several volcanoes and had fantastic views, but sometimes all you can see are clouds.

The Pichincha volcano is on the western edge of Quito, and it is where the Teleferiqo is. Ride up only if you're not bothered by altitude sickness. It's not snow-capped, but as the other poster said, you can see several volcanoes (Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana) from Quito on clear days in addition to Pichincha.

I highly recommend staying a night in the Otavalo area. I love the Haciendas Pinsaqui and Cusin. For cheaper options, I have heard good things about Dona Esther and Hotel Otavalo, and also about the Runa Tupari, which is the chance to stay with an indigenous family in Cotacachi (www.runatupari.com).

The hotels are not near the airport in Quito, but if you are arriving at night/leaving early in the AM, traffic is limited and you can easily travel to a hotel in 10-15 minutes. If you are trying to get through town at 9am, you may have traffic and take half an hour.
