Wetsuit for November trip to Galapagos

Hi, could anyone recommend what wetsuit we ought to take for a trip to the Galapagos in November please - short or full length and what thickness? Thanks!

Dear AFL,

it all depends on your tolerance to coolish water. Do you swim in the English channel without a worry? In November, I think you should consider at least a shorty. The waters can be as cool as 18-20 degrees C, and given the marvels you'll be seeing in them, you want to make sure you can linger as long as possible.

Check with the ship you're booked with - they can likely arrange the rental for you, avoiding having to lug one around across the globe.

Warmest regards,

Are you an avid snorkeller or just an occasional one? It's always nice to be warm and comfortable wearing your own gear, probabbly a 5-7 mm. wet suit will be allright. Also bring your own mask and snorkell. Make sure the mask has a wide vision angle, buy a cristaline silicone one, for wide open vision. Lots of passengers don't adaptate very well to the equipment provided by the ships. If you want you can also bring your own fins. Regards.

thank you both for you advice, we had hoped to get away with shortys (5mm) but perhaps we ought to be thinking about full length if we really want to make the most of the snorkelling??

Just get a full length wet suit, it will be good for your future trips, and to protect your body entirely from the sun and jellyfish/reefs, etc. Regards to all.

Hi! being a diver and a surfer in Galapagos for many years, also a naturalist guide etc. I always get this question. The idea is that you need to know if you really will spend lots of time in water. R U diving(snorkel or scuba?) Where you normally dive? what water temps. Galapagos in Nov have generally 24C degrees. his can change from place to place areas. Winds avg 15 kts outside on deck sometimes more for Nov (Cool season). So my advice:

Take a full wetsuit if scuba diving, for sure. Take short legs, long sleeves if only snorkeling. But get a lycra suit full because that will make you feel confortable on deck and does not take much space in luggage. And you can sometimes when sunny and not too cool just snorkel in lycra suit.

Cheers have fun!

Hi there, we too are gonna be in Galapagos in November and have been wondering about the same thing? Been advised there are none to hire on our boat (we are going with Gap) but will be able to hire in Quito. May do this I think, then we wont have to lug around on first part of our trip to Peru? There seems mixed advice about water temperature but if it means we can stay in longer eh? What date is your cruise. Ours is the 12th Nov. Gettin excited now - not long!!

Good idea to rent in Quito wetsuit if you return there etc. If only snorkeling ocasionally just need a lycra suit. And that takes no space or weight in luggage. If snorkeling long time need at least top wetsuit. But in general all depends on your time in water, water temps you are use to (where you come from). Etc. Just keep in mind this: Galapagos waters range from (NOV) 22-24 Centigrade. PLus wind real feel maybe 20C. Currents variable with variable temps all over Galapagos. Sometimes upwellings (underwater currents coming up from bottom colder water) happen and you will feel quite cold with mixed temps in same area.

Have fun, Stay the longest possible in Galapagos, best eco tourist is not only who does not touches anything, also is who relly loves Galapagos and appreciates it staying the longest preventing too many fast packages filling Galapagos with 3 days tours which is a problem for ecosystem.

Have a nice trip over and happy to help

If you are just snorkeling a shorty is fine.

If you are diving

a custom fit long one would be the best.

thickness has no significance 1/8 inch is fine

it is all about the fit.

Thanks everyone for the further messages. We have decided to take shortys with us. We want to be able to snorkel as much as possible and, as we don't go back to Quito afterwards (straight home from Guayaquil), renting from there is not an option for us. We fly out to Peru on 8 Nov (it's our honeymoon) and start our Galapagos cruise on the Mary Anne on 18th - can't wait!!

Hi, Hope you don't mind me contacting you directly but your advice would be appreciated. Have just posted topic on forum, diving options - October. Am arriving on islands on 16th October and have 3 days before cruise departing from Cristobal. My choice is between two days diving from Santa Cruz and a ferry transfer to Cristobal or 3 days diving from Cristobal. Anxious to see hammerheads. Also prebook or book there ? Cheers for any info, Wanderwolf
