Buying Underwater Camera in Galapagos

Hi,

Does anyone know if you are able to purchase an underwater camera in the Galapagos for a decent price or will it be inflated?

Thanks in advance

Tash, even if you were able to buy an u/w camera, the price would be really high. There's a high duty placed on most imports in Ecuador.

Hi Tash,

There are the disposable underwater cameras around Puerto Ayora for sale, but the prices will be marked up. If you are looking to buy a digital underwater camera or underwater housing, you will be pretty much out of luck here!

Best to buy before hand, either way.

Thanks for your help! We may then try and buy one in Quito before we get to Galapagos!

Totally inflated but you can get them. We actually found a digital waterproof camera here for cheaper than a waterproof cover to our other camera but still expensive - almost double the price...but you can rent decent underwater digital cameras for $20 per day and also the disposable kodak ones are around $11...just get them scanned in later...ENJOY!!!

Dont rent cameras in Galapagos, is a rip off, sometimes they charge usd 40 per day. The only cam you can get here would be a dispossabIe one. I bought my underwater Lumix for usd 700 in Quito. No marine cases here for sale. If you want to feed our socialist government, buy here and pay taxes.

Tash, even you can buy it in quito, it will be doubled price than your home. Apart from local food, everything here is more expensive than West.

Hi All,

Are now in Puerto Ayora and loving the Galapagos so far!

Just thought I would update this thread.

We spent a day wandering around Quicentro in Quito and ended up buying an underwater camera (Sony) that wouldn't have been our first choice and was very expensive due to lack of choice.

We were a little bit surprised to find out that there is a great store in Puerto Ayora that sells a large variety of underwater options including disposable cameras, point and shoots and housings for DSLR's. The other surprise, of the ones that were available in Quito, in this store the prices were about 30% less!

So, our advice, if you need a digital underwater camera you can get them in Galapagos.

The shop is on a corner opposite the sports courts near the main marina on Charles Darwin.

Cheers,

Tash

Sorry all I remember is that it was near the main marina for the day trips. I think the post office was close by? It was a while back. One of the best trips so hope your friend loves it as much as we did!

Thanks for the update, its nice to know there is somewhere you can go in an emergency.

I would however be cautious about buying anything expensive outside your own country. Many camera manufacturers only give warranty service in the area they were purchased - and its a long way to go back if it goes wrong.

Of course if its significantly cheaper then you may opt to take the risk and pay for any repairs - but I think in Galapagos/Ecuador its likely to be more expensive than most places and less choice.

Also don't forget if you are on a cruise then you may not get the chance to shop and if you do it may be in the middle or at the end of the cruise.
