Tip Policy on the Galapagos Legend Cruise Ship

Would anyone please be able to tell me what the tip policy on the Galapagos Legend Cruise Ship? How does it work? Is it paid every day or in a big bulk at the end of the trip? The cruise is planned for this upcoming February. Thank you.

Dear Linen,

tips are payed at the end. Typically, one tip for the guide, and another for the entire rest of the crew. The ship people will likely give you instruction in this regard at one point - no need to worry about that!

Usually $10 per day for entire crew and $5 per day for the guide is expected from each passenger. Multiply this by the number of days you are on the ship and you get the amount which is expected from you at the end of the cruise. Another guideline suggested to us by the guide was the tip of 10% of the cost of your trip for both: the crew and the guide. Depending on how much you paid for the cruise you might prefer one way or another.

Either way it is more expensive than big cruise lines, where you expected to tip your server and your maid each $5/day/person.

I spent 4 days in January, 2012 on the M/V Galapagos Legend. The suggested tip by my tour company (Vantage Deluxe World Travel) was: $12.00 USD per person, per day for the crew; $8.00 USD per person per day for the expedition team. That is what I paid & it is collected the day before you actually leave. The crew was worth every dime & more. The meals were all very good. The cabin boy was fantastic--cleaning the cabin several times a day. My expedition leader--not so much! While he spoke excellent English (U of Michigan) & was from the Galapagos he was so bored walking the same paths, seeing the same animals, answering the same questions, etc. he could hardly get through the day. Be aware there is a $50.00 rental fee for wet suit & snorkeling gear. I rented a wet suit & flippers for a cost of $25.00 (had my own snorkel & mask).

I have recently spent 4 days on the Galapagos Legend. Their suggestion is $15 per day per person for the crew and $8 per day per person for your guide.

This can be high but you are free to tip based on the service you receive. Also, bear in mind there are 70 crew members in the Galapagos Legend.

You do not need to worry about tipping until the last evening when you will receive 2 envelopes. One envelope is for the crew and the other one for the guide and you deposit them on your last day.

You can also tip directly to a member of the crew to recognize any outstanding service. During the cruise, our waiter and the front desk were phenomenal so I tipped them personally.
