Galapagos tour companies

I'm planning on going in december (yes of this year) and haven't done any research at all - just starting. Can anyone recommend a good tour company for the Galapagos for the over 50 yo set? Want to do at least 10 day trip and am going solo. Would love some recommendations as to who to book with/through.

thanks

Roberta

You may find the above link handy as it shows the boats that do the cruises and more often or not a further link back to the companies in question.

Thanks so much. I went to the site but they only have short trips - up to 7 days. I want to go for at least the "normal" 10 days. but I appreciate the post.

Hi,Roberta--

The most common/popular trip is for 8 days/7 nights. The actual travel time often takes 10 days, since many people fly to Ecuador a day or 2 early, to enjoy that lovely country and to give any lost luggage a chance to catch up to you before you head to the archipelago. It can be very challenging (if not impossible) for your luggage to reach you once you're on a boat.

I personally have used this site a lot as we've planned for our return trip in 2013: galapagosislands.com/galapagos-cruise.html . These days, since the Park regs changed, you can make longer trips by piecing together various legs of a boat's itineraries. Generally, a boat will have a variety of different lengths of cruises that will overlap at the beginning and the end with other pieces of their offerings.

If you're really new to travel in this area, I suggest you work with an agency that is an expert in the Galápagos. They can give you the lay of the land--er, islands--and help you sort out all of your many options. You'll find a number of them recommended here. I know that Happy Gringo, CNH Tours, and Columbus Travel get consistently good reviews. There are others here, but I can't think of them at the moment. Contact several and see which ones are most responsive to you.

I used Christuan Jacome with Columbus travel ( Galápagosislands.com) and he catered it to what we wanted and we are in the same age range. Did the Maryanne cruise and scuba diving..total of 9 days on the islands and 2 days traveling... Hope it helps..

Dennis from Guanguiltagua is a divemaster and has been working for like 20 years or something, apparently, in the tour business. He helped me a lot with arranging my tour in Ecuador, and was super flexible etc. - crafted a custom trip for us that didn't fit any on the site.

1-8773555956 is his toll-free number (thank god for the toll-free) and the website is http://www.guanguiltagua.com/

Hi Roberta,

A good friend of mine and her husband, who has been a Galapagos Guide for many years, run a company called Think Galapagos. They specialise in Small Group Trips and have a great track record in organising trips for over 50s. You just have to read some of the testimonials on their website to see how amazing these trips are. Having worked in the area for decades, they know all the local guides and hotel & yacht owners. Santiago, the husband accompanies all the trips and is one of the most respected guides in the area.

Their website is www.thinkgalapagos.com and phone number for more info is +44 1482 872716.

Good luck in your search

Do talk to Heather at CNH Tours to see if she may be able to help you. We're your age and she helped put together our trip.

As Tina indicated, most boat trips are a week, the extra couple of days are usually spent either in Puerto Ayora or in Quito. In Quito, you can take a day trip to Otavalo, or do like we did and spend the night in a hacienda.

Here you can see our trip...

Dear Roberta,

I would like to advice you the same way a friend did to me, before you plan your trip to Galapagos you need to pay attention on the city from where you are going to Galapagos, because if something goes wrong with your documentation (not common, but can happen) you can have the company (where you bought your tickets) near and they will be able to help you immediately.

I had a reservation with www.galapagosislands.com for the next year's summer, but in my plans I wanted to depart from Guayaquil to be able to know the city and visit a friend, so following my friend's advice (my son in law) I rather reserve with http://www.galapagoscruises.com/ (which is established in Guayaquil), and because I mentioned my concerns just to be prepared in the event that something happens, they told me they are glad to help me in the airport, or if possible I can go to their office.

Sometimes I feel I'm a bit extremist on these kind of events, but I rather be prepared than wasting my vacation's budget because of something that could be prevented.
