Some Qs regarding Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Peru

I am traveling to Peru in mid-February. I will be arriving late at night (my flight arrives at 11:30 pm or 23:30) and by the time I pass through immigrations/customs and grab my luggage, it will likely be well after midnight. I will need to take a taxi to my hotel in Miraflores. Are there any recommendations as to reliable taxi or private transportation companies in the Lima Airport? Any to avoid regarding airport transportation and taxis in general?

I am traveling to Cusco as my main point of city to reach Machu Picchu. I have already booked a flight through StarPeru from Lima to Cusco and a train through PeruRail from Cusco (Poroy) to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes). I know there is an option to purchase tickets to Machu Picchu itself online, but unfortunately I am not able to because I do not have the right payment method for it as I only have US bank accounts. Are there any selling points in Lima where I can purchase one in advanced or would I have to wait until I get to Cusco to purchase a ticket there? I know I can’t buy at the site and will have to do it in advanced but fortunately, I will be getting to Cusco and will have an entire day/night in the city before leaving to go to Machu Picchu the following morning. Is 24-hours in advanced enough to secure a ticket to the site or is that pushing it? I’m just worried I won’t be able to get a ticket because it sells out and I know only a limited number is sold per day. If so, hopefully there are other purchase options you guys can provide.

Lastly, I read about some sort of airport tax that tourists have to pay when leaving country. I’ve seen conflicting amounts ranging from $6 to $70 USD. Has anybody paid this tax recently and can tell me the exact amount for a 1 week stay?

Thanks all!

Regarding your last queston the Airport tax is usually included in your international ticket. I would check your ticket

Use the Green Taxis at the airport.

The departure tax has nothing to do with how long you stay in Peru and I think they are built into the tickets now so you wont have to pay anything.

Taxi Green available at airport just after customs and before you exit to where the crowd of people are.

In February you should have o problems in securing a ticket to enter MP its low and rainybseason. get a rain plastic poncho before you depart towards A.C

You might check back in January on the official website, they are supposed to be fixing the online ticket purchase, although it still will require Verified by visa.

But in February you can buy the ticket same day in Aguas Calientes after you arrive on the train.

Thanks for the heads up! I will check everyday in January to see if they've fixed it and will allow me to make a reservation with my verified Visa card (I had to use that to book with Star Peru as well).

I will be on the lookout for Taxi Green at the airport and I do plan on bringing a poncho...I understand February can be quite wet in Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Thank you all!!!

In Miraflores (suburb of Lima, recommended, by the sea, tasteful, great restaurants) I stayed at a nice hotel (Casa San Martin) for $60 a night, and they sent a car to the airport to meet me. The cost for the car was $20, but well worth it. It's a long drive from the airport, and I was happy to be safe with a trustworthy driver.

It was really nice, a good neighborhood, great breakfast included, and a very nice staff.

I got my ticket for MP in Cusco at a travel agency on Avenida El Sol. There are many agencies, and you should have no problem at all in February, off season.

I paid no airport tax when leaving Peru. I think it must be included in the ticket.
