lake titicaca or colca canyon? 4 extra days!

hi all,

we will be finishing up with machu picchu and returning to cusco on friday 1 nov. night and don't fly back home until wed 6 nov and need some advice on what to do to fill those days.

one option is to bus it to puno and spend the time on lake titicaca, although i'm not really sure what to do/where to stay. everything seems to be organized in tours over there and i'm really not trying to do another tour.

the other option would be to fly to arequipa and head over to colca canyon. is this feasible given the amount of time we have?

we absolutely need to be back in cusco to fly out on the afternoon of 6 nov.

any other ideas on what to do/places to go check out? we are a couple in their mid-twenties who likes adventure, meeting new people/cultures, eating vegetarian food, and want to keep our budget around US$500 for this leg of the trip (including transport to/from cusco).

thanks in advance!

Both options are very different. One is a small town (Puno) next to a lake with small islands to visit. The other is a small city (Arequipa) with the deepest canyon in the world to explore. It really depends on what you want to see and do.

I have done both and I loved them both equally. If you go to Puno, you can just find any hotel (as Puno is a very small town) and use it as a base to explore Lake Titicaca. You can join tour groups or explore on your own but will be more difficult.

If you go to Arequipa, you will still need to join a tour group to bring you to Colca Canyon. You can do a day trip or a few days' hike in the canyon.

Arequipa is a big city, not small. It is a few hurt drive from colca but it's really not bad. You could easily do either and probably both in 4 days. We lined colca canyon better because you can see the condors there. But you should read up and decide which seems better to you. We did them both as small group trips which was both easy and pretty inexpensive.

I see a scenario where you could possibly visit both Lake Titicaca and Colca Canyon as long as flights line up.

- Fly to Arequipa either the afternoon of Nov 1 or first thing in the morning Nov 2.

- Spend Nov 2 in Arequipa.

- Join a 2- Day tour of Colca Canyon departing on Nov 3.

- On the second day of the tour (Nov 4) instead or returning to Arequipa with the tour take 4M Express www.4m-express.com from Chivay to Puno and overnight in Puno.

- Spend Nov 5 touring Lake Titicaca and overnight in Puno again.

- On Nov 6 return to Cusco either by Plane (from Juliaca airport) first thing in the morning.

Check with a tour operator such as Giardino to be sure they are allowing visits to CC, not too long ago someone reported closure due to volcanic disruptions!
