Monkey Island

Our flight out of Iquitos will be leaving at 2:30pm. We have the entire morning before we leave to ourselves (after having spent a few days in a jungle lodge) and were hoping to visit monkey island before heading out. Do we have time if we head out around 8am? Anyone have any idea how long it takes to get to the island if we're staying in a hostel near the airport the night before? How long do most people spend here?

Also, does anyone know how long before your flight you are supposed to be at the airport in Iquitos? If we show up at 1:30 will that give us enough time?

Hi Stardust86, thi is Héctor from Amazon Explorer, a registered tour company based out in Iquitos.

Respecting to your question, the Monkey Island (La Isla de los Monos) was flooded in April and May, however it was possible visit it.

At the present day, the island is dry again and is open everyday. They operate 24 hours a day, but we suggest visit them early in the morning, from 7am to 1pm, because is located around 1 hour from Iquitos by speedboat. As you know, they houses more than 40 primates of 9 different species, living free. Admission rate is S/.20 Soles.

I recommend contact the Island's representative (Mr. Gilberto) a day before you go or early in the same day, in order to notify your arrival, due if you will try to go by yourself to the island, many boat operators and touts will say you that is better to visit the "other Monkey Island, that one the is close to Iquitos", which is nothing but a little snake farm (informal) with 1 or 2 snakes and 4 or 5 monkeys.

Well, Mr. Gilberto from the real Monkey Island speaks an intermediate English, but is better if you can speak Spanish.

If you are in Iquitos, *DO NOT PAY ATTENTION ANY PUSHY TOUTS* (anybody that approach to you to offer tours or services).

Also, contact iPerú, the National Tourist office for a free map and information how to get the Island. They are located at 161 Napo Street (right away after the Plaza de Armas) or in the Arrival Lounge at the Iquitos Airport. Service free of charge. Open hours: Mon-Sat 9am to 6pm, Sun 9am-1pm.

I hope this information be useful to plan your trip, and enjoy Peru and the Amazon.

Best regards.

Hey There,

Have you been to the Manatee Rescue Center? We would suggest a visit here before your flight. Its on the way to the airport and is really worth a visit. You can bottle feed baby manatees for crying out loud!
