How best to burn a day in Iquitos

We're headed for a three day trip to Muyuna Lodge, but fly into Iquitos in the AM the day before we go up the Amazon. Wondering how best to burn that day in the city (or out, I guess). Traveling with one small child and one tween. Stoked about our jungle experience, and would like a nice easy but rewarding day beforehand.

Really not much to do in the city

Stick around the main plaza, walk to the Amazon river

There are a number of things you can do in and near Iquitos.

1 - Indigenous Cultures Museum - Artifacts from a number of Peruvian and Brazilian tribes - Malecon Tarapaca #332

2 - Ayapua Maritime Museum - Restored rubber boom-era ship converted into a museum - Plaza Ramon Castilla

3 - Manatee Rescue Center - A short ways out of Iquitos past the airport

4 - San Juan Artisan Market - some fine handicrafts there

5 - In the evening check out the Plaza de Armas and also the Malecon area (1 block from the Plaza de Armas) - some nice restaurants and bars there.

Go to Quistacoche and swim and look at the animals, its not too far and they have stuff to eat and drink and picnic tables and padle boats. My kids love going swiimming there, nice sandy beach
