Hello fellow Washingtonian - Yes you do need permits and a licensed guide to be on any part of the Inca Trail. You must show your permit and passport to start the trail. There is supposedly some back way to hike to MP and it is not on the actual Royal Inca Trail so you don't need a permit.
The cost of the 2D permit is the same as the 4 Day permit also. So it makes the 2 D hike seem rather expensive.
