Can anyone tell me how much it costs to get from Lima to Cuzco and then take a train up to Macchu Picchu, including transportation and food? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. We would like to go as cheaply as possible and are planning our trip for October/November.

Thank you!

www.perurail.com for the train (backpacker from Ollantaytambo) you can book yourself online

124 soles admission to MP for the day

US$14 for the bus up

Taxi Cusco to Ollantaytambo maybe $30 US although you can take the bus for a few $$ (transfer Urubamba)

Hostels in Ollantaytambo or Cusco are maybe $25 per night (average)

Food is inexpensive if you eat in local places $3 to $10 (nicer place) per meal, breakfast often included in hotel

Biggest expense variable will be the airfare Lima to Cusco. There are lots of posts on getting the inside-Peru LAN airfare, which is much less than the LAN fare posted on the international websites. You can use a local agent or try to book yourself (doesn't always work).

Be sure not to rush thru just to see MP, there are other fantastic things to see in the Sacred Valley.

If on a budget you might want to ask at the Lonely Planet forum, they are tudent budget oriented.
