My wife has knee problems and we wonder how much climbing is required once you reach the gate of Macchu Picchu to view the site.

Very little is essential. But that would mean you would have to keep to the level of the entrance, and wouldn't provide you with panoramic views OVER the site (the classic photo, looking down on it)

It is a very hilly site, but it is possible to wander round without too much climbing.

Try googling 'machu picchu 3d diagram'

Visiting MP or any Inca site includes climbing many,many stairs and mostly at high altitudes.
