Can one visit Macchu Pichu by Helicopter? Or, is it banned. Information is really confusing and dated on internet.

Machu Picchu and the area around the ruins was declared a no-fly zone a few years back and helicopter tours are not offered at this time.

I heard a landing spot was made for some VIPs some years ago, and a massive, ancient rock was damaged in the process.

It sort of defeats the purpose of visiting the site if you have to use a helicopter, or have them buzzing around. Plus its in a cloud forest - not the best place for visibility.

I was about to post, with the visibility issues, don't think a helicopter tour would work a lot of the time.

Also, it's a place to wander around leisurely and admire, not fly around for 2 minutes.

They were banned a few years ago mainly for the protection of the Peruvian bird called the Cock of the Rocks.

Great idea !
