Local beer

We will be in Montevideo for a day via a cruise ship. Our plan is to wander around, possibly rent bikes, have lunch. Does anyone know of any place walking distance form the port where we can sample locally brewed beers on draught? What are the best Montevideo beers available?

Thanks!

Montevideo local beer is the brand PILSEN, available blond, black and red. There´s also other brands, but they are quite similar: Patricia, Zillertal, Norteña (brewed, as the name says, in the northern Paysandú)

Cheers!!

Thanks! Is there a nice pub with atmosphere walking distance to the port to sample PILSEN and others? Not looking for a party place, just something with some local flavour where we can get a decent beer & possibly lunch.

At least to my taste buds, there's a big difference between Pilsen and either Patricia or Nortena. Pilsen is very bland, watery. Patricia is more full-bodied and an excellent beer. Nortena is nearly as good s Patricia. I've never tried Zillertal.

The problem will be finding either Patricia or Nortena. Pilsen and Zillertal are owned by a Brazilian conglomerate, which practices monopolistic trade practices and gets away with it. Between them, Pilsen and Zillertal have 96% of the market in Uruguay, and yet the conglomerate is allowed to impose exclusive contracts on bars and restaurants -- i.e., if the bar wants to serve Pilsen and Zillertal, it cannot serve any other beer (or cannot list the other beers on the menu, or cannot serve them to the same temperature, or some other nonsense). This kind of thing was made illegal for companies holding a high percentage of the market in the USA nearly 100 years ago and in Western Europe around 50 years ago, but in Uruguay it's still going on.

The Mercado del Puerto is a great place to have lunch. It's across from the port, full of parrillada restaurants. Don't know about the beers, but this place is incredible.
