You have to visit the Mercado del Puerto at lunchtime, it's packed with Parrillas, just choose the busiest as that will be the best.

Chrella......I usually agree with you....but this time.......I can't.

In December, we took your advice...as well as the advice of others........and we did NOT have the best steak experience.

When we return to MVD......we, personally, would not eat at the Mercado.

CHEERS.

Problem with Mercado del Puerto is the sheer number of restaurants. Some serve fantastic steaks; others don't. You also need to know what cut to pick.

This may not be what you’re looking for, but while you’re in Montevideo, you must try the national sandwich of Uruguay, a Chivito, thin-sliced churrasco beef served on a kaiser roll with mayonnaise, olives, mozzarella, tomatoes, fried or hard-boiled eggs, and bacon or ham.

And one of the best places to try this unbelievably delicious steak sandwich is the Manchester Diner, a fixture in Montevideo for decades (at the corner of Convención and 18 de Julio).

As Expat wrote above, there are numerous restaurants at the Mercado del Puerto, all cooking over wood coals. The restaurant at the Mercado that my winery owner friends always went to was El Palinque and I had a great steak there during my last visit in January. Also recommended as a starter course are either the "rabas" (fried squid rings in batter) or the jamon crudo with garlic toast. Both are great! El Palinque has a great wine list too.
