Estancia Tour in Montevideo

We are going to Montevideo and would like to spend the day at an estancia. I have heard about estancia La Rabida, but can't find any information about tours going there or to any other estancia. Do you have any thoughts, advise, information, experience that could help me.

Thanks.

Laura,

We are also looking for an Estancia tour from Montevideo!

Have you had any luck? We won't have much time and probably will need a private tour to get us there and back. We're on a ship, but this tour is not offered. We have to be back at the pier by 3:30 PM. So we may be out of luck.

You can see many tours here: www.recorriendo uruguay.com.uy

Unfortunatelly the page is in Sapnish, but if you get in contact I?m sure they'll give you an answer in English: contacto@recorriendouruguay.com.uy

PurpleQueen and Brahmama -- There are vineyards within striking distance of Montevideo, as well. I drink their wine but haven't been to them, so all I know is what I've seen in guidebooks (e.g., Moon Handbook on Buenos Aires, which treats them as an outing from BA). But if finding estancias is proving difficult, you might look into these.

Thanks for the contact information and I have emailed both of them.

I am also interested in the wineries. However I don't know a name which to "google". Can you provide a name?

Also, what wine is it that you drink and enjoy? I would like to have an opportunity for a tasting and to buy a few bottles for the cruise.

Thanks for your help.

Brahmama

Good question about the wines. I enjoy Malbecs from Argentina. I would like to know a similar wine from Uruguay.

Unfortunately, my husband doesn't want to go to an estancia because of the return to the US and the questions at customes about whether we have been to a farm or ranch.

ummmmmm (thinking) I don't think they ask you anymore about being on a farm. We were in Italy in May and Canada in September - and we weren't asked either time in Customs. They just checked our passport - I think one guy asked if it was business and how long we'd been there. That was it.

So perhaps that was just when the "mad cow" thing in Britain was so intense.
