4 weeks in May

We are visiting The Cook Islands for 4 weeks in May 2013 and we are looking for a nice, quiet, self contained apartment with a basic kitchen for a middle aged UK couple?? We are on a budget so we need somewhere reasonably priced.

We don't mind a walk to the beach but we don't want to be in the middle of nowhere.

Other than that we are not fussy!!

Many thanks,

Hi Stan,

I would suggest you have a look at holidayhomes.co.nz or rentraro, these 2 web sites list many holiday homes for rent along with indicative prices.

If you haven't already done so, send for your free copy of Jasons Cook Islands guide which comes complete with a map of Rarotonga & Aitutaki - this may help you decide what area in which you wish to stay.

When you've narrowed down a few options come back & I'm sure there will be many who can give you advice on your choices.

Kia Orana bgf,

For budget-concious travellers, I suggest you look at areas of Rarotonga away from Muri, Titikaveka, and Vaimaanga. These areas tend to be more pricey due to their proximity to very nice beaches, and deeper lagoon areas.

If you are looking for quiet spots, and with less tourists too, have a look at areas including Kavera (south-west), Arorangi (west), Black Rock- Nikao (west) and Tupapa (north-east).

Beachfrontage properties tend to be pricier compared to houses situated back or a little away from the actual beach-front. There are many delightful properties in this bracket all offering very good value, and well appointed accommodation.

Another tip: SE and south are affected by the prevailing SE breeze that starts to become chilly (read annoying at times) over winter - from May onwards. So somewhere around the sheltered sides of the island are favoured during these instances. Kavera - Arorangi - Black Rock - Nikao are all located in the SW - NW; while Tupapa is on the northern side of Raro.

I'll send you a private message with a couple of suggestions.

All the best with your accommodation search.

Kia manuia.
