Itinerary for Single Traveler

I plan on going to South Pacific for 14-20 day trip, Mid-December (2013) - early January. I'm 53 years old, fit and independent traveler. Enjoys fishing (and eating the catch), snorkeling, diving and an awesome beach bar, etc.

Appreciate nicer boutique style accommodation and don't mind splurging, for example, to be oceanfront or have some type of unique experience. I don't want to be isolated and really enjoy meeting other travelers and locals.

1. What is the best method to move between islands?

2. How much time allocated per island?

3. Accommodation recommendations?

4. “Don’t miss” recommendations

Appreciate any recommendations and tips...thanks a million!

Kia Orana Smith, welcome to the forum.

I can only offer information related to the Cook Islands. This destination is served by Air Tahiti from Papeete (weekly), Air New Zealand from Los Angeles (weekly), Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia from Auckland (daily flights) and Air New Zealand from Sydney (weekly). There are no direct flights from Fiji or Samoa, or elsewhere in the Pacific.

Accessing the various outer islands in the Cook Islands is by Air Rarotonga - www.airraro.com. Between Rarotonga and Aituaki there are up to 5 flights a day, depending on the day of the week. Flying is your best option for the Cook Islands.

For Rarotonga, being the big island and most developed too, there is a wider range of attractions. Spend 5 - 7 days, but your stay can be broken by a side trip to Aitutaki, and another island possibly like Atiu for example (round trip flights available). For Aitutaki I suggest at least 5 days or longer since your interests in snorkelling, diving, fishing, and beach bars, and meeting people will be met well. New Zealand, and in particular Northland - Bay of Islands and Tutukaka (Poor Knights Islands) could be a good choice for a further 7 days and to experience something different from tropical islands. The flight connections to/from NZ may fit better with your dates and itinerary.

For accommodation on Rarotonga, look at Manuia Beach, Crown Beach, Little Polynesian. All are beachfront properties, with licenced bar-cafes onsite. A small and not boutique property is Aroa Beachside Inn on Rarotonga with its wonderful beach-bar, casual atmosphere and with meals available.

On Aitutaki, consider Etu Moana, Samade (although the accommodation villas are on the inland side of a sandy no-exit track - beachfront bar location has great lagoon views ), Tamanu Beach and Popoara Ocean View Villas.

Don't miss experiences - Rarotonga deep sea fishing, scuba diving, cross island hike, snorkelling in Tikioki marine reserve, Trader Jacks bar!. Aitutaki - lagoon cruises, fishing & diving charters, visiting an uninhabited islet, Fishing Club bar, a round of golf, bone fishing (and release however) .

Enjoy your trip. Kia manuia.
