Octopus vs Treasure and Hideaway vs Geckos Resort

Hi Everyone,

Single mum travelling with 5yr old daughter..

I have been offered good deals around the same price for both Treasure and Octopus for 5 days and then Want to stay on coral coast for 3 nites before leaving back to Brisbane so we can go to kula eco park, sigatoka, natadola beach and mud pools. I was looking at spending last nite at raffles as have an early flight on thursday morning and close to mud pools and thought my 5yr old would enjoy waterslide.

Was looking at all of these places as not as honeymoonish but get a variety of guest including solo travellers for me to make friends and socialise but still child friendly.

Geckos cheap but cheerful..Thought it would be a good base to explore but still has some comforts and can go across to shangri-la to use their beach. Hideaway Iv heard is lots of fun for a few nites.

So I need to get back to Treasure and Octopus by tomorrow and make a final decision and need some advice on which one... Im worried with Treasure just reopening when we get there would mean disorganisation and might be a bit of a ghost town?? but water seems to look more calm and crystal clear than octopus... It will be first time snorkeling for my 5 yr old.

And if anyone thinks hideaway or geckos is better...

Thanks!

TB

I don't think this will help sorry but Bedarra is a nice small Inn type place. Good accommodation, restaurant, small pool but it's adequate, across the road to the beach (hardly any traffic as the main highway was diverted to go behind Outrigger which is a few minutes walk away). Beach is typical Coral Coast but pretty with palms and sun loungers. With the added bonus of being only a few minutes drive (or a longish walk) to Kulu Eco Park. Kids stay free I think and (the important bit) excellent Happy Hour that a lot of locals call in for, always someone there to strike up a conversation with. :)

I stayed on Treasure, but years ago. It's nice.

But not a patch on Octopus. Go to Octopus. You have actual coral right off the beach. Hills and scenery and stuff. A village right over the hill. It's as near to the real Fiji as a nice resort can be, probably. There's no comparison.

Stayed at Hideaway, would recommend. Very handy to Sigatoka. Coral coast is a PITA though, 'coz of the 3 hour transfer time (unless you get a taxi) but if you're staying in Nadi the last night, not such a hassle.

Treasure has been closed for renovation since the cyclone last December. It sustained a lot of damage so the 'new' Treasure should be lovely. Octopus is very different more Fijian but check that they have the vermin problem under control unless they don't bother you. It is a more Fijian experience. Not being a fan of resort compounds I would go to Geckos on the Coral Coast. It is a 2 1/2 hour return trip on the Yasawa Flyer to Octopus (it leaves Denarau marina at 8.30am and returns around 5.30 to 6pm), you can go by their boat but it is not large and a bumpy ride if the sea is not calm. Treasure is less than 1/2 hour from Denarau. For the amount of time you have for the holiday I would do Treasure. It would be a late trip down to the Coral Coast if you do that last or a very early morning one up to Denarau if you do it first . Going to Treasure you have several transfers available throughout the day to and from Denarau. No rush.

Thanks so much for your replies...Ok Octopus it is!:)

Yeah travel time from coral coast is a PITA.. ha ha! ..that's why I thought Gecko's over Hideaway as a bit closer and cheaper. I was checking out Bedarra too Dianz as I love the sound of the food and peacefulness but being able to head to outrigger if keen for some entertainment. I think someone mentioned you could hire a nanny here.. do you know anything about this?

Also can anyone advise if hiring a car would be advisable for a single female and child or too dangerous and better to stick to hiring a driver/guide instead?

I have driven many times in Fiji but would not do it alone with a small child. Roads not that good and local drivers often reckless.

Octopus is great and I'm sure you will love it. They have a very reasonable babysitting service if you wanted to go snorkelling, walking etc, or to sit with your child while you have a later dinner. I have had grandchildren with me there several times and the kids love it too.

Bula TB

i think Bedarra would be a good choice for you on the Coral coast there are several other small resorts and bars Kokos Bar & the Crows Nest Resort just to name two within walking distance as well as the Outrigger the Eco park is just over the road from the Outrigger .Sigatoka is about a 5 min taxi ride away

Gecos and the Hideaway are a little more isolated 15 or 20min from Sigatoka & eco park

Vermin at Octopus? Have never encountered such.

Some "wildlife" (harmless bugs), a handful of flies, ditto mosquitos, a lovely affectionate cat, a couple of well behaved dogs from the village.

Haven't seen rats or similar.

I don't know what's what with hiring a nanny at Bedarra (at that other stage of life - no kids to take with us) but Fiji is renown for it's fantastic child care so I'm sure arrangements could be made. Just email them, I always got a reply the same day if I had a question. When we were there a couple had a baby/toddler that they felt okay to leave in their room (he was asleep I presume) if they were in the restaurant. They had a downstairs room straight across the lawn from the restaurant (maybe 10 meters away at a guess) which they could see or reach within a minute if necessary.

Get a driver, you'll be tired, it will be getting dark and Fijian driving is 'interesting' to put it mildly.
