Fiji (Tavenui) or Bora Bora

Ive seen folks asking about Fiji vs Bora Bora but it tends to be related to value of resorts. I dont really care about that piece of it. My wife and I will be going either to Bora Bora or Fiji for our 10th anniversary this fall. We have found affordable accommodations in both places via VRBO. Not too into being pampered or even much relaxing really. We really enjoy beautiful sites, Scuba, Kayaking, hiking and things of that nature and are looking for something a little more exotic in terms of location. Really loved Kauai, HI for example. So assuming the hotel cost isnt an issue, does anyone have any suggestions on picking one vs the other? Also anything to watch out for? We have found a nice over water Bure in Bora Bora for about $3000 for the week which seems great to me but want to know if Im missing something to think about. Thank you for any help.

All I can say is that you won't find any international branded hotel chains in Taveuni. What you will find is a remote paradise with gracious hosts a universe away from the hustle & bustle of the western world. You really are considering 2 completely different locations and neither is comparable to Hawaii. Hold onto your hat and be prepared for a COMPLETE change of pace if you choose Fiji.

Thank you, thats helpful. Would you mind expanding on the difference with Kauai? Thats just my only frame of reference in going to the Pacific to this point. The beaches in Kauai werent the most fantastic at times but the eco adventures there were great. Would you rent a car on Tavenui? Also, what about hopping over to another island like Qamea or Matagi, is that something worth doing? Would welcome any input you have. Its a lot of money to go to this part of the world and I certainly dont mind spending it, just want to make sure its as awesome as expected!

Believe it or not, Kauai is over commercialised compared to Taveuni - no, you wouldn't rent a car. Our DE for this area (E&CinReno) will no doubt be in here later and she can give you specifics on staying in the region and share her experiences of her fave place in Fiji. In fact, she would probably recommend you stay at either Qamea or Matangi....... There are some pretty luxurious hideaways on Taveuni and it makes a great dive base but the beaches are nicer on the smaller islands.

I've been to both Taveuni and Bora Bora, and for me, Bora Bora wins hands down. Also been to Kauai, and it's beautiful, but doesn't easily compare to Bora Bora because of BB's beautiful lagoon.

We rented a car on Bora Bora and stayed in an overwater bungalow rented thru VRBO (the places across from the airport, maybe you are looking at the same place?) We had no problem getting around, paved road, beautiful scenery, plenty of stores for shopping and hotel restaurants when we wanted to eat out.

Totally different that what you'll find on Taveuni. There is no way I'd rent a car there. Roads are in terrible shape, most not paved. The locals do very well, but not at all what I'd want to get into with a rental car, and I've driven rentals in a lot of places outside the USA. We didn't stay on Taveuni, but rather on Matangi and did some day trips to Taveuni as well as flying in and out of there. It's a beautiful place, but again for me, between the two, I'd go with Bora Bora.

Hi Seekingsummits.

Will try to answer your questions:

Qamea and Matangi are adults only private island resorts. Guests only, no day trippers allowed.

"We really enjoy beautiful sites, Scuba, Kayaking, hiking and things of that nature and are looking for something a little more exotic in terms of location."

Resorts on Taveuni, Qamea, and Matangi, our favorite resort in Fiji, are absolutely stunning, exotic, Mountainous, lush, green jungle. They are known for spectacular snorkeling, and diving.

You can hike around Matangi, and overlook Horseshoe bay. Takes about 1 1/2 hours. Highly recommend the private luncheon there. Nothing like being on a private beach, just the two of you, with great food, drink, breathtaking snorkeling, and kayaking. Kayaks and a small catamaran are also available at the resort.

Qamea also offers luncheons on a private beach, and hiking on the island.

Resorts offer a village/school tour. Not to be missed in my opinion. Will give insight into the daily life of the Fijian people. The smiles and laughter of the children will melt your heart.

Hikes to the Bouma waterfalls, Lavena Coast Walk, pearl farm visit, and other tours on Taveuni are available from Qamea and Matangi. If interested have a look at their websites for tours/activities. Some are complimentary others at an additional cost.

If you might be interested in Matangi or Qamea, have a look at their websites for information.

The beaches will not compare to Bora Bora, but still nice. They are more gold, not as long, and more tidal. Meaning you won't be able to walk, swim, snorkel, or kayak 24/7. We always check the tide charts before going to Fiji to insure we snorkel, swim off the beach mid morning to early afternoon. Takes about 7 hours for the tide to go in and come back in.

Don't think there are rental car agencies on Taveuni. Agree with hummingbird. Wouldn't drive, if they did. Besides bad, narrow roads filled with potholes, you have to watch out for people and animals. That said, we enjoyed the ride to Paradise Taveuni though it was an experience. There is no beach at all at Paradise. We knew that before going, so were not disappointed.

Besides getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and reconnecting with each other in a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere what we enjoy most about Fiji is its people. They are without a doubt the most friendly, happy, genuinely friendly, caring people on the planet. They will go above and beyond to insure your vacation is everything your hope for and more. As strange as it sounds, you arrive as guests, and depart for home as part of their family.

The following link has pictures of our last vacation to Matangi. Will give you an idea of the beach, resort grounds, bures, pool, snorkeling, etc.

It comes down to what you want in a resort/vacation. Taveuni, Matangi, and Qamea have your wants as far as activities. However, they are not commercialized and much more laid back with the opportunity to do as much or as little as you want. Fiji will give you a much different experience than Hawaii or Bora Bora.

Don't hesitate to ask, if you have any questions about Matangi. Scubajo was married at Qamea a few years ago, and has nothing but glowing comments. Am sure she will respond, if she sees your posting.

Hope this helps.
