Fiji Itinerary Enquiry

Hi :D

We are 3 backpackers going to Fiji for 10 days. We are on a tight budget but still plan to visit Mamanuca and Yasawas for 4 nights each while we are there. Does it make most sense to base ourselves on one island and take day trips to the spots we'd like to see?

On Mamanuca we would like to see Beachcomber, Mana, Castaway. On Yasawas we would like to see Octopus, Blue Lagoon, Sawailau Caves.

1. Are these good spots?

2. Which of the islands are best to base ourselves.

3. Is there any alternative to the Bula pass, as it is seeming kind of pricey.

Regarding food, most resorts have compulsory meals.

4. Is there any way of getting out of this? We will probably miss most of these meals if we do day trips on the islands.

Thanks :)

Debbie

First - you will find you can't do day trips to other islands - the Yasawa Flyer does one round trip daily, leaving Denarau at 8.30am, going up the island chain stopping at all resorts until it gets to Nacula - where BLBR is - around 12.30pm, when it turns around for the return trip, gets back to Denarau around 6pm.

Mamanucas are on different boat routes. If you go to Beachcomber, it is possible to catch the Flyer there as it goes past, to reach the Yasawas. Other than that, you would have to go back to Denarau, have a night in Nadi, then get the Flyer the following day.

So on a tight budget, you are best to drop the other 2 Mamanuca resorts.

The Flyer is quite expensive if you are on a budget. You have the choice of getting a 7 day pass, but if you are going to only one or two Yasawa resorts it is cheaper to get single trips between them. I don't think they say that on the website, but you can email them to get those prices. This is what I was quoted last year's prices per person - FJ$ -

Denarau  to Octopus = $148.00

Octopus to Blue Lagoon = $110.00

Blue Lagoon to Denarau = $166.00

Compulsory meal plans - what they say - compulsory - no alternative.

Budget wise, I'd say you would be better to choose one or two of your stated resorts. If the caves are really important to you, then BLBR - you can't access the caves from Octopus.

You will find plenty to do to fill in a week at either BLBR or Octopus, and could easily access Beachcomber either end of your stay.
