Checking baggage all the way

I'm travelling to Fiji from the UK, I go from one UK airport to another to LAX finally on to Nadi.

I've been told I can check my bags all the way through to Nadi at my first UK airport. Just wondering is this how everyone does this type of trip? How risky is it losing bags etc? Is it safer to get your bags at each airport o make sure they have arrived?

Any advice, tips on doing this type of thing appreciated.

We checked our bags through all the way from Washington, DC since we weren't going to have enough time in L.A. to pick them up and re-check them. When we got to Nadi, 3 of our bags were there but one was not. My clothing and dive bags made it, but my husband's dive bag was left in L.A. as it wasn't properly transferred from United to Air Pacific. Thankfully he had his clothes. Since the flights only come in a couple times per week, we were very lucky to get his dive gear before boarding a liveaboard dive boat in Lauatoka. Once we had left port, we wouldn't have been able to get the bag until we got back a week later. Luckily the bag arrived two days after we did, while we were still on land.

Although it's a hassle (especially if you have to switch terminals) it's safer to pick up your bags and re-check them. Also, if you're traveling on partner airlines (for instance, if we were flying American and Air Pacific) I understand the tracking is better.

I'm doing a return trip to Fiji, too, going Houston/LAX/HNL/NADI and it seems no matter where in the world I go one of my bags do not arrive. So, because of the previous mention, I'm taking some clothes in my carry-on and in my wife's bag. Depending on how much, how large and how heavy your luggage (not to mention distances you must traverse from one terminal to another), I find it less restricting to check it all and trust....
