Which market? Lautoka or Nadi

Were looking for a great market to visit. We wanted to pick up some fresh fruits and veggies and get a fiji experience with the locals. Any advise would be wonderful! Thanks

I've always thought Lautoka is the more interesting - it's a bit bigger and they have a handcraft/souvenir section on one side, and a really good fish market too. Lautoka doesn't have the aggressive tourist-type shops that Nadi does, so you get a better experience of a Fijian town. While you are there you could also have a look at the fishermans wharf - don't think they sell fish there but it's fascinating to look at the boats - if you don't have your own car then you would possibly need to get a taxi from the town centre unless you're up for a longish walk. If you are going from Nadi accommodation then try going by local bus (less than $2 for fare) - I enjoy seeing the locals, it will usually have Indian radio station going really loudly - and if you get lucky you will have a bus with no windows! The drive between Nadi & Lautoka goes through canefields and is good scenery.

I agree Lautoka market is much more interesting, if you go on a Friday or Saturday the market is even bigger than through the week with more vendors coming in. The market has fruits & vegetables, indian spices & sweets, fresh fish and handicrafts. It is a great place to experience everyday fijian life. The vendors have no problem with you taking photo's - just ask first.

If you are looking for somewhere for lunch - try Ganga's vegetarian restaraunt, Chili Bites or Pa's Kitchen for local flavour or if less adventurous the Chilli Tree Cafe.

It makes for an interesting day to travel to Lautoka for look at a less 'touristy' town as Nadi is. As TaiMarily states its a good drive with interesting scenery. Definately try the local buses, at least one way then taxi back with all your goodies.

Lautoka would be the biggest market with the fresh fruits veggies or a smaller one closer to Nadi is the Namaka markets this may also be an option for you!
