Where to stay in Fiji

We are planning a family trip to Fiji for May/June next year on our way back to Aus from NZ.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to stay taking into consideration we have two small children by then they will be 3.5 and 1.5 so activities such as snorkelling are out of the question. Also my husband finds it hard to sit still so we are looking for somewhere where we can hire a car and go exploring, eat at lots of different restaurants and also spend some time at the beach. I was thinking of dividing our time between the mainland and an island ?? Is there a main restaurant strip or tourist spot on the mainland that would be worth staying close to?

For the mainland part of your trip, if you want lots of restaurant choices, consider Denarau. Its only about 30 minutes from Nadi Airport. It doesnt have a great deal of local culture, nor does it have white sandy beaches, but there are several resorts, all with some good restaurant choices & lovely pool areas.

Also there is the Denarau Marina, just a few minutes from all resorts & it has some great restaurants, a few shops, including a supermarket & is also the departure point for many day trips.

How many days are you planning on staying? Denarau is really the only "tourist strip" you will find but it's nothing like being in Asia. Fiji just doesn't have the population. Mostly it's very laid back & quiet. Dining is primarily AT the resorts which, except for at Denarau, are all spread out along the coastline or on the islands.

If you're there long enough for an island stay as wel - probably Mana or Plantation (being the larger resorts with most options) would suit you best. Hubby may be surprised - it's pretty easy to fall into "Fiji Time" once you're there :)

The Sofitel on Denarau is very kid friendly.Lots of activities in and around Denarau island, including day trips to the outer islands.I reccomend the Malolo Cat to Plantaition Island. Its only 70 fijiian dollars roundtrip per person. It drops u at 1030 in the morning and returns at 5 in the afternoon. Plenty of time to walk the island. There are 2 resorts there .
