Long Nadi Layover - Questions

We will be arriving from Los Angeles at 5:30am on a Wednesday, but our domestic flight to Savusavu does not depart Nadi until 2:30pm -- 9 hour layover. I have a few questions:

1. Can we leave the airport in between flights? And if so, will we have to bring our luggage with us? or will it go directly to our small inter-island flight (both the flight from LAX and from Nadi to Savusavu are with FIji Airways)

2. Is it safe to travel in and around the Nadi airport?

3. If the answer to #2 is yes.... any tips on things to do or see?

Lots of questions, sorry!!! Have never been to Fiji (we will be there for our honeymoon) and don't want to spend an entire day sitting in an airport when we're in a beautiful new place!

first thing - YES, safe to travel in and around Nadi Airport - but as always use common sense

Yes, you can leave the airport between flights

If the airline wont check in your luggage you can store in Left Luggage

see this YouTube video

You can then catch a taxi to Port Denarau approx. 30mins drive have breakfast/lunch etc

see this YouTube video of Port Denarau resturants

you could even ask your taxi driver to drive through Nadi Town on the way to Port Denarau so you can get a feel for Nadi - you could even get out of taxi and walk around the Nadi Fruit and Vegetable markets

Make sure you always set a price with the driver for the taxi ride before getting into the taxi

If you don't want to take a taxi to Nadi or Port Denarau

you can walk over to Gateway Raffles with your bags (if you don't want to leave them at Left Luggage)

and take a swim in the hotels pool and have something to eat in the cafe

FJD$5.00 per person to hire a towel

see this YouTube video on how close the Gateway Raffles is walking

hope this information helps with your travel plans

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and honeymoon.

In addition to what Daz mentioned you can also visit the Garden of the Sleeping Giant started by actor Raymond Burr (Perry Mason and Ironside) to house his orchids.

Coming from the states you will need an adapter angled for Australia for charging camera, laptop batteries, etc. We take a small power strip. Allows us to charge more than one battery at the same time. Drinks at resorts can be pricey. Suggest purchasing alcohol at the duty free shop at the airport in Nadi. Another option is one of the markets in Nadi. We can't purchase our brand of choice in Fiji, so take the amount allowed by customs in our checked luggage for having drinks in our room/bure. Know most resorts will not allow you to take your own drinks to the dining room for meals. Some allow wine, but charge a corkage fee. For other suggestions of what to take with you:

Am sure your honeymoon will be everything you hope for and more.
