visa, green cards, insurance etc... what do we need?

We are going to Dubrovnik at the weekend and will hire a car to drive to Bosnia, Serbia & Montenegro. This is a 10 day journey and we are Irish. What do we need in terms of visas etc.. I googled and am sure it said we didn't need any but several posts have mentioned green cards etc... We will encounter any charges entering each country/visas etc.. is it as simple as driving over each border or what will happen. We have travelled alot but this trip we have not planned well and now only have a few days if we need to get anything. Please advise

You will not incur any charges when crossing the border. Just make sure the car company knows you are taking the car into these places. At the borders you will be asked to show passports but nothing more.

When you rent your car in Dubrovnik you need to tell the rental company you will be driving outside Croatia in those other countries.

You MUST HAVE the cross-border card (green card). The cost depends on the rental company. It may be 50 euros, it may be included in the cost of the car.

This is your insurance when driving outside Croatia should you have an accident. If you cannot show this card/papers you may well be charged at the border when you cross. You will also need it if you are stopped by police - a common occurrence - and as your car will have Croatian plates it will be obvious you are a tourist.

Apart from the border at Neum I have always had to show these papers at the border crossings.

It really is a good idea to read the various rules for driving in each of these countries. It will help you to avoid being stopped by the police. Rules re lights, speed limits, alcohol etc. You can find them at...

Good luck and have a great trip.
