FIRST TIME TO CROATIA - recommendations please

Thinking of holidaying in Croatia next year. Know very little about it other than I know I'd like to see Dubrovnik, but probably would not want to stay the whole time there.

We like smallish quieter resorts, beach would be nice but not essential, good places to eat out and relaxing atmosphere.

Like sightseeing so not averse to hiring a car or getting on public transport to get around.

Have heard good things about a place called Kotor which is in a fjord apparently - is it a good place to go?

Kotor isn't in Croatia, it's in Montenegro. however, lots of people fly into Dubrovnik then go to Montenegro as the aiport is only 16 km from the border.

Stay in Dubrovnik for a couple of days and then head to Korcula. It has a very relaxing atmosphere and has everything you are looking for.

Everywhere in Croatia is lovely. Dubrovnik, Hvar Town and Istra are more cosmopolitan and more expensive. Biograd, Vodice, Zadar (Borik), Makarska are larger resorts for beach holidays.

I'd suggest you pick a base like Trogir (…blogspot.com/2007/03/croatia-online-trogir.…) which is smaller but lively. You can head to the beaches on Ciovo Island, get into Split easily and visit the islands of Brac and Hvar from there, and there are a couple of good travel agencies that will help you with trips to eg the Krka waterfalls, Sibenik, Zadar etc.
