yes, i have found that most places , especially in Croatia, don't use Am EX...so i now take a visa.
I think it depends on where you are staying. All the big chain hotels like Hilton, Starwood, Best Western, Accor, Leading Luxury Hotels of the World, MAS and Radisson take American Express. I think where you will run into a problem is smaller hotels and restaurants especially outside of key tourists spots. I always bring a Visa card also.
Keep in mind that numerous restaurants in Croatia (and other countries) only take cash so make sure you bring your ATM card and/or a credit card that you can get cash on. I always ask the restaurant what form of payment they take before I sit down. We have run into some restaurants that displayed Visa or American Express signs on their door and then have found out that they no longer take them. I can definitely understand this in these difficult financial times.
It would be better to have Visa or Master Card....
We have always found it best to take 2 types of card in case one is not accepted. In Croatia our visa has been accepted at bigger resteraunts. Smaller places and the long distance bus only accept cash. ATM machines are plentiful.
