Relaxing resort in August?

We are looking to rent a place with a pool the first week in August, but don't know the resorts in Croatia.

We would be flying in from Dubrovnic and are looking for somewhere that is not heaving with tourists (if possible), not far from a sandy beach (for the children) and somewhere where we can go shopping for food and eat out. Don't really want to drive more than 1.5hrs from the airport.

We really want to see Croatia and want to stay somewhere nice, we are tied to school holidays so can only go in August (unfortunately).

Many thanks,

I think you are going to find that in August most places will be heaving with tourists. Also there are very few sandy beaches in Croatia, they are mostly pebble and rock. I think nearest to Dubrovnik you would have to go to Lopud Island where there are sandy beaches. It is not a very big island. There are hotels, bars etc and I would think that it is quieter there late aftenoons and evenings after day trippers have gone home.

How about Korcula island and the sandy beach at Lumbarda?
