Split to Dubrovnik - where to stay inbetween?

Hi,

We're flying into Dubrovnik on May 29 and then have seven nights before joining a boat in Split and taking another seven nights to get back to Dubrovnik via the islands.

We haven't booked anywhere for the first week but were thinking a couple of nights in Dubrovnik first but are open minded after that.

Where would anyone recommend en route to Split?

We're a couple in our late 20s from England.

If you can work it out so to an island along the way..as in Korcula, Hvar or Brac. Other options along the coast would be anything in the Makarska Riviera or maybe even Omis.

I absolutely agree with Barry and my choice would be Korcula. From there you can easily get to Split on a 6:30 AM catamaran.

You can choose any island in the middle, if you like them. They are all beautiful. Hvar, Korcula....

We're doing the islands in the second week so were looking for a couple of places on the coast where the bus stops en route to Split? Is Bosnia out of the question?

There are a couple of lovely towns along the mainland coast which are on the Dubrovnik to Split bus route. Gradac is on the southern end of the Makarska Riviera (Marco Polo hotel there is lovely and right on the waterfront), Brela and Baska Voda are on the northern end of the Makarska Riviera and there are lots of hotels/apartments there on the waterfront. The beach there is lovely and there is a promenade along the waterfront between the two towns. If you are looking for a few nights in a bigger place with more nightlife I would recommend a couple of nights in Split. It's worth staying near Diocletian's Palace, it's pretty cool to stay in a 1700 year old living museum and there are lots of great bars, restaurants and nightclubs too.

The other option is to take the ferry route up through the islands however you'll be seeing lots of islands on your boat trip so the mainland will give you a chance to see another side of the Dalmatian Coast

I think Mostar would be a neat place to spend a night along the way.

The Marco Polo in Gradac is a good suggestion. The Villa Andrea in Tucepi is another fine small hotel with good food.
