With three weeks, this is not an unreasonable road trip. I know a lot of people on here do not like (read: detest) road trips and will try to talk you into anchoring yourself in just a few select places. But road trips are a great way to see a whole lot of territory and you're allowing yourself a reasonable amount of time to cover this much ground.

From what I understand, Bratislava is a one-day trip, do-able as a day trip from Vienna. Everything important to see in Zagreb can be done in one full day. How much Vienna you need really is a question of personal preference, from what I understand, For some people, a week in Vienna would not be enough to see all of the architecture and art. For others, one day is enough. So how much Vienna are you thinking? And if you are going to be in Austria, you might also want to pop into Slovenia (Ljubljana, Bled), which really is the exact middleground culturally between Croatia and Austria.

As for your other destinations, Budapest is worth three days, at minimum. Dubrovnik is worth three days, at minimum. Depending on how much time you want to devote to the northern sights, you may have time for Istria. If you are going to Zadar, definitely set aside one day for Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is an excellent day trip from Zadar. And you need to decide if you want to do an island or two. Korcula or Hvar might make a great stop between Split and Dubrovnik (presuming Split is actually worth a stop rather than a pass-through). Or, instead, of Rijeka, you might do an island in the Kvarner, such as Rab or Pag.

So many possibilities. Let us know what you like, and what pace you like to travel at, and maybe we can give you some better tailored feedback.

Thxs for a great guide,we are very middle ground re art architecture ,if its free and doable we visit. We have decide now to ditch the plan for Zadar and Rijeka,we intending on travelling from Vienna via Zagreb to Split,I am surprised Split is only worth one night, but we accept the advise.

We love to socialise and meet the local people. We have been to the former Yugoslavia many years ago(in fact Plitvice) so we are interested to see if Croatia and maybe Slovenia have changed.

We are open to a total change of itinerary even a ferry to Italy(not Venice ,been to the lovely Venice) so please all advice accepted with great enthusiasm and thanks.

For the latter part of your trip, I would recommend a couple of days in Split, then island hop via Hvar & Korcula down to Dubrovnik (a couple of days in each place). You will get a good covering of historical sights, beaches, ancient towns, nightlife, good cafe-bars where you can socialise and meet locals too.

Dalmatia is famous for it's coastline and islands and ancient sites and I think this would give you a good chance to experience that. The ferry journeys alone are fabulous with breathtaking scenery from the top sun-decks.

For ferries to Italy you have the choice of Ancona or Bari from Split or Dubrovnik.
