Croatia is still cheaper compared to the rest of Europe. There are guesthouses or apartments. It may be difficult to book on your own online though.

We have always self catered and have had no trouble doing this. That being said I think Dubrovnik will be the most expensive place that you could go to in Croatia. We have always rented apartments and an occasional hotel and have always done it online, so you shouldn't have any problems doing that.

When I think quiet and interesting I think of island places such as Korcula and Vis. When are you planning on going? In terms of places to stay, just ask on here once you find the cities you want to go to and I bet you will find answers here. And yes I think public transport is a good way to get around Croatia.

Self catering - very easy. Public trasnport - very good. Dubrovnik - very expensive. I'm with Barry on this particularly the islands. Will you still be flying in Dubronvik or are there other options?

We went just over a year ago, and while we were surprised in prior research at how expensive hotels seemed to be, we soon realised that everyone rents self catering apartments. We too fancy Dubrovnik and the islands, but our 1st trip- to Zadar (cjosen just because of the cheap Ryanair flights!) was really sucessful. We just turned up out of season and found a place on spec easily on the island of Dugi Otok (see below for where we stayed)

. If going at a peak time, just do some research on past TA posts (search bar above) or a search engine and you'll find dozens of agencies for apartments- here's a selection - some maybe out of date- plagiarised mostly from Tripadvisor's local experts;

http://www.zadarapartments.net/index.html (thanks to Morlaque, TA expert)

http://www.croatiaapartments.net/ an agency with many apartments in the region; some accessible only by boat (the boat tends to be included!)

www.apartmani-simicev.com near Zadar- a recommendation from another TA post '5 min to the sea side and 10minutes drive from the city'.

http://www.apartmani-zadar.com/ recommended by Tamerlano

A local operator who seems to be trying hard to get on TA; apartments, tours, taxis, - Zadar & islands; http://www.sandra-zukve.com -email zukve.nin@gmail.com

http://www.tzzadar.hr/ tel +385 23 316 166

A satisfied Scottish TA poster recommends Karmen's apartment in Zadar old town, booked via Tourist Agency JCZadar http://jczadar.googlepages.com/accomodations

If the Zadar flights are still arriving late, you may have to stay overnight before hitting the ferries; no problem as Zadar is well worth it. Although as I said, some hotels are a bit pricey, we used http://www.hotel-venera-zd.hr rough & basic (looks like student residences) but cheap, clean and in the old town near bars, restaurants and ferries, and a reasonable taxi fare from the airport.

or try another TA poster's idea; Mira Rovis-Jakupovic,Zlataraska 323000,Zadar 385 98 9938033 – ‘good, clean rooms with bathroom and air conditioning on the market square in the old town’

As I say, we went offshore, an hour by boat, to Sali on the isle of Dugi Otok, the gem of a place we found was a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment with sea views, then 30-70 Euros depending on season- ring Marijana, on tel 00385 23 377 350. Or do as we did and just go to the tourist agency on the harbour opposite where the ferry docks, who act for lots of rooms and apartments in Sali and the island– tel 00385 23 377 208 or 38585 99 518 2929 www.adamo.hr or email info@adamo.hr

Apologies if some of these are out of date and focus on Zadar region; I don't even know when (or if) that route will resume- my main point is thatits really easy to find places

On Crers and Losinj Islands you can find coast and sea of incredible beauty, and you can rent apartments and rooms at very reasonable prices.

On island Cres you can look for an apartment in Cres, Martinscica or Osor.

On island Losinj I would recommend Veli Losinj, Nerezine or Mali Losinj.
