Not to mention what you are interested in. How long do you have? When are you going?

Plitvice lakes are a natural wonder but in July the park might be pretty busy. However, you are en route to Zagreb so it is more practical to visit Plitvice. It would be possible to visit both places by rent a car , if willing to do lots of driving.

I would take a bus to Trogir and spend the day there. The bus station is in the cruise port; Trogir is about 45 minutes away. Be sure to buy a round trip or return ticket as the little bus station outside Trogir is not always open. Also, no one speaks English. We had time to sepnd the morning and early afternoon in Trogir and then the latter part of the afternoon in Split.

Split to Zadar is 3 hours drive by bus, little les by car, Zadar to Plitvice 1,5hours by car and 2 hours by bus. If you take rented car you would be fine with timing within those 2,5 days, and perhaps see it more, without stress.

Easy to drive in Croatia..we did one way rental Zagreb to Split. I'd choose Split over Plitvice especially if you've been to parks like Yellowstone, Lake Louise. We spent 20 days in Croatia last fall and Plitvice is the only place I'd skip. If you do rent a car check out Nin and Sibinek as well as Zadar. We drove from Plitvice to Sibinek with stops at Nin and Zadar in one easy day. Split is great .. be sure to visit Mestrovic gallery and also the underground at Dioclesian's palace.
