My first thought was Cavtat, which keeps you close to Dubrovnik. Also thought of Rovinj too!

Barry has expressed precisely my recommendations. Croatia is a spectacular country to visit and a very good choice.

Do you know where you would fly into - Pula, Split, Zadar or Dubrovnik as that would affect suggestions?

The island of Lopud off of Dubrovnik is my personal favorite - very peaceful and very beautiful. Lopud is small so shopping is limited, but you really can't lose with any of the Dalmatian islands (if you like the Greek isles, you'll like these). Also, you're right near Dubrovnik with lots of shopping and nice restuarants.

Food can be a little pricier on the islands, but in general i would say Croatia is priced about 75% of "rich world" prices, with the more expensive places being about what you would pay in the UK.
