Need to book lodging in advance (first week in Sept)?

I'll be traveling with a friend the first week in September, and ideally we want to book our first few nights in Dubrovnik and then play the rest of the trip (about a week) as we go, deciding when we wake up in the morning if we want to stay another day where we are or move to a new destination. We'll be flying out of Split, so covering towns/islands in between the 2 cities. Add to the mix that we don't want to share a room, so will be looking for a B&B or apartment rental.

Do you think we need to plan a day-by-day itinerary and book all our lodging in advance?

Problem is two fold first week in September is still high season and its also the start of meeting and conferece season, so I would try as much as possible to book everything, unless you play it by ear as you say but then prepare for paying more because you will only find the real expensive places left!

or the really poor places left. It also depends if you want to waste time looking for somewhere to stay every time you turn up at a place. Basically if your standards are very low you will be fine OR if you are happy to spend a lot. Remember that week is still school holidays.

if you want to go with the flow, it would be advisable to book the Dubrovnik accommodation, and then just turn up in places. It very much also depends on weather - last year Dubrovnik was packed until November, this year... we'll see. The tourist season eases down in the end of August, so you will be fine in September.
