Clarification on accommodation types

Hi there,

We're thinking of coming to Croatia this summer, and having mentioned it to some friends, they said that when they went about 5 years ago, they had a great time and lots of freedom by hiring a car and staying wherever they ended up each night. They said they were able to do this because it was very common to find adverts in the windows of people's houses advertising rooms for the night, even in villages, and it was cheap and convenient. My question is, is there a name for this type of accommodation? They seemed to think there was but couldn't remember it. Does this still happen/exist? Is it a safe and cheap way of finding somewhere to stay? And we likely to have any trouble finding rooms in this way in August? Many thanks for any clarification on this!

That is your typical private accommodation and indeed, all along Croatian coastline, you'll see a sign on almost every house. Be it a bed icon or "zimmer", "rooms", etc. Is it cheap? You be the judge of that. :) One thing to note - swimming pools in private villas are still quite rare in Croatia.

Now, as for finding an accommodation. July and August are the high season. Most (best) offers will be booked months in advance. Still, the less picky you are, the more options and better choice you'll find. :) In some cases you might have to pay more (only expensive ones may be available), in some cases you'll be away from the sea or will have to make some other compromise(s). So, if perfect accommodation is not important to you, you should be just fine.

NOTE - in high season, most (private) accommodation options require you to stay no less than 3-7 days. Some will refuse shorter stays completely while others will charge you 30-50 % more. So, jumping from place to place and staying only for 1 night may prove to be difficult. Perhaps going for camping sites would be a good option.

Btw, having/renting a car is often a good idea, especially in Istria area.

The Croat word is Sobe which means rooms or Apartman - which you can probably guess. The signs are square blue plaques and they have the star rating on them too. Single night stays in August will be expensive - it's usually a minimum 3 nights in the season.
