Where to stay the in the Istrian Pennisula

When visiting the Istrian Pennisula, would you suggest staying in Motovun or Rovinj (we will have a rental car) and what hotels / restaurants would you recommend?

Thanks, Jim and Jeanne S., Chicago

When are you going and for how long? Do you prefer coastal towns or rural interior hilltowns? You will be able to see and do much more with a car - happy you are doing that.

As said, depends on your own preference but there are many more restaurants in Rovinj and easy access to all coastal resorts as well as inland towns.

When do you plan to come? From June till September I would always rather stay in quiet Motovun. BTW, have you considered Grožnjan, too? I like it even more than Motovun... Or if you want to stay on the coast, I would suggest Fažana... I like Rovinj very much and it is one of the most beautiful places Croatia, but gets very busy during summer. It is a great decision to rent a car, there's so much to see in the whole Istria! Don't miss a trip to National park Brijuni islands! Have a nice stay!

We will be there the first half of May so I hope Rovinj won't be too crowded. BTW we will have a car. Also how about Hvar vs Korcula - if you only had one night to spend, which one would you recommend?

Thanks, Jim S.

May is an awesome month to go. Rovinj is crowded then but not like summer. I, too, highly recommend Grožnjan over Motovun. Motovun is still definitely worth seeing as are Vrsar, Oprtalj, Bale, Zavrsje, Draguč and Hum. As you have a car, you can get to them all. Don't miss Pula or Poreč.

I would pick Korčula over Hvar as it is a bit quieter and less chic but it depends on your style.

I find Istria beautiful all year round. :) Motovun and inland Istria are generally more peaceful than the coast, but in May it shouldn't be crowded anywhere. I too would choose Grožnjan over Motovun, but would recommend visiting both. You can see them in my MTB Street view movies, compare and decide for yourself. Grožnjan is a real gem, a medieval hilltop town at it's best. Mostly in very good condition, great place, great feel, great views - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obZhjAH3Nh8. Motovun's location is unbelievable. Sitting right on the very top of a cone shaped hill and going the full 360 degrees, it's like a cherry on a cake. Still, it has almost no flat surface, you'll have to climb a long way on a not too comfortable pavement. Though, I think it offers more in terms of tourist attraction (shops, restaurants, souvenirs, etc). It's mostly in not too good condition, but the views are incredible - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od8WboFtnWU.

Once in Istria, you could also consider visiting Pula, with it's multitude of Roman artifacts (the best known being the amphitheatre) and Brijuni islands. Then the east coast with Mošćenice and Mošćenička draga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6strAAXnK7U and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oat_XIUMkEg), Lovran, Ika, Ičići and the beautiful Opatija (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXKdKyvQbQE). Walk down the promenade, visit the incredible small parks (too bad the open-air theatre will be closed) and down the Lungomare coastal path all the way to the amazing fishing village of Volosko. Also, try to drive up to the Mt. Učka's Vojak peak (1400 m) for breathtaking view of entire Istria and the Kvarner Bay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOJ1ZPCJ_SY).
