Zagreb on Christmas Eve

Hi,

We are visiting Zagreb but unfortunately just for one day. We would prefer to spend Christmas eve in Zagreb - wanted to check if Advent markets would be open on Christmas eve? Or is it recommended to come to Zagreb on 23rd? What kind of ambiance would we find on Christmas eve day time?

Would there be live music at different places?

Any advice/tips/suggestions would be helpful!

I'd rather arrive earlier since on Christmas Eve many of the locals will probably stay at home and I'm not even sure if all the stalls will be open and working the whole day/evening. Probably will, but if it's possible, rather try to come day earlier.

My experiences from last Christmas:

Companies will shorten their working hours and most of the people will be off work by 1PM.

These people will flood the city center which will become an absolute drunk fest. Shots being sold by meter and gipsy bands leading the revelries.

By 7-8PM, most of the people will go home to sober up and Advent market will be deserted - a friend had a stand last year and had zero traffic in the evening.

Many people will attend the midnight mass (all churches have them) which is a cool thing even if you are not Christian/religious.

Clubs will be full by 1AM and that is where you want to be heading to have fun.

Be prepared that virtually nothing will be open on Christmas day.

Bottom line - if you want the proper Advent market in the evening, come the day before, but you will still have a blast if you just come to the city center on 24th afternoon.

Yes, Advent market will be in full swing in the evening on 23.12.

Plenty of people will be in the city, frantically searching for last missing presents :D

Will be a very slow day. Only some of the bars and almost no restaurants will be open. Probably the least visited day on Advent market.

But if snow happens to fall, it will be magic, some of the best photo opportunities you could get.
