Travelling to Croatia next week for the first time.
Can anyone give suggestions of traditional dishes we should be trying.
Go with the mixed grill if you want a good meat dish...cevapcici, raznici, etc.
Are you talking Zagreb specifically or are you traveling to other regions? Croatian food varies from region to region. I can help you out a lot with Istrian food if you are going there...
Local dishes (in Zagreb) are:
1. Sarma - sauerkraut minced meat and rice
2. Štrukli - cottage cheese and daugh
3. Krvavice - black pudding - pig blood impregnated grains
If you have a car visit one of " seoski turizam " houses around Zagreb for the best local food.
Cevapcici and raznici are more common to Serbia.
Anthony Bourdain video was excellent.
We will have a car so we will seek our a seoski turizam house.
Croatia is known for great sea food and you should go for meat dishes in Serbia as they are superior to the ones you get in Croatia. So: grilled fish, octopus salad, squid... don't forget to enjoy peka cooking and check online for some cooking classes if you want really neat experiences in local gastronomy
In Dalmatia try cuttlefish ink risotto. It doesn't look too good but it tastes yummy. Mum used to cook it for us many years ago but she stopped. I couldn't get enough of it when we were over there.
Go to the Restaurant Purger ("Purger" is a word that partially comes from German language and is used for a person who is born in Zagreb, as well as his ancestors), it is in the center of Zagreb, and they still prepare old traditional food from north Croatia.
I suggest the Štrukli
