Only a few hours in Zagreb

My parents and I will be flying into Zagreb, then headed down to the Plitvice area to stay overnight. Assuming our flight isn't seriously delayed, we have a few hours to spend walking around Zagreb before we head out. Is it possible to see a little bit of the city centre in that time? We know we won't see everything, but planned to take the airport bus into the city and walk around for a little bit, have a meal, and then pick up our rental car (we were planning to use idealRent, and they would meet us somewhere).

Does the airport bus go to the main train station, or somewhere else? Is that close to some of the main sights like Jelacic Square and nice places to walk around? Is there a place there or close by that we can stow our luggage safely to walk around for a while?

Thanks!

The airport bus line ends at the main bus station: from there (buy the ticket at any kiosk), cross the tram rails to go lefwards, take tram no. 6 or 13 to take you to the main square - Jelacic, which is the 5th stop. A cute short walk would be to take Ilica street (to the West, the same direction as your tram from the bus station), take the first street right - Tomiceva, and take a little ride on our funny short funicular, which will take you to the Upper Town and first you'll see is the Lotrscak tower - if you feel fit, climb to its top and you'll get the best view of Zagreb. When you exit, take your left and you'll see the St. Mark's church (left from it is Government's building and right is the Parliament). You make go down by the Parliament building, to the Stone gate, go through it, then go downwards to the Jelacic square or through Dolac open market to the cathedral. ... That's a very brief tour of the old town.

You can visit the Old Town and eat at one of the many cafe-bars and restaurants, (just behind Ban Jelacic Sq) and Strossmartre, walk up the stairs inside Lotrscak Tower for great views over Zagreb.

Agree that if you get to Jelacic its a great area to wander around for a few hours...maybe a walk up to the Cathedral and maybe even up to St Marks...i always like seeing St Marks!
