off the beaten path in Romania

We are a couple in our late 50's in good shape. We would like to visit Romania for 2 to 3 weeks in May 2013. We are interested in viewing wildlife, traditional agricultural settings, small villages, with a sampling of the cultural highlights scattered in. Big cities are not of much interest, especially for more than a day. We would enjoy getting in to the less tourist visited areas where we could get an up close exposure to traditional life. What are the places that would be recommended for us that would be of most interest to our tastes?

Thank you.

Maramures is my favorite region of Romania. There are many agrotouristic farm homes there which are reasonable and usually have great traditional food. There is a good website to find them in each county. The villag of iPod is a great place to stay.

When you say Ipod (not many of those in Maramures) i think you mean Glod. Breb is another option with nice walks on to the Cocks Chrest with views over the whole of Maramures can be stuning on a good autumn day.

I would recommend a textile study tour if you are into such things. it mainly takes part in Maramures, but it also includes a couple of must-see more touristic attractions, as Brasov, from where you can book a Wildlife observation tour of a couple of hours, which you might like.

Hope it is of help :)
