Both places associated with Dracula, Poenari fortress and Bran castle, can be done on your own (without a tour) relatively easy, although getting to Poenari does involve a lot of walking.

Yes, but not so easy!

"Dracula's Castle" in Bran is located at approx. 30 km from Brasov. You can take either a taxi (but be prepared to pay the extra-distance, because it is far from Brasov; you have to negociate the price and even then, you cannot be sure that the price will be firm!).

From Otopeni International Airport, you need to take a shuttle-bus (783) to Bucharest to PIATA VICTORIEI Metro Station, then you take the undergrond/ metro to GARA DE NORD (North Railway Station) - the first stop from Piata Victoriei.

Train - Bucharest to Brasov (2 1/2 hrs) - price approx. 50-65 RON (depending on the speed you like: Inter Regio, Inter City...)

From Brasov railway-station, to the bus - either a cab (taxi) or another trolley-bus (20-25 minutes).

Brasov - Bran: bus (at every 30 minutes, during summer time can be really crowded) - after 30 km, you reach Bran

The you climb the rock and inside the castle you have approx. 150-175 stairs (climbing up and down all the time, it was a military castle...)

As a National Guide of tourism in Romania, I recommend a guided tour from Bucharest (transfer from airport to Brasov directly) and the luggage will be safe in the car. Also, you will receive precious information on the route and you can visit in the same trip: ex-Royal summer residence Peles Castle (in Sinaia) and Sinaia Monastery, "Dracula's Castle" (Bran Castle) and the city of Brasov.

If you need my help, it will be a pleasure to meet you!

Is not that hard to go from Bucharest to Bran. I advised many people here on TA from different countries and they all made the journey safe and with no problems.

You need to take a train Bucharest - Brasov. To get to Bran from Brasov you need to take a bus from Autogara 2 ( bus stop 2 ) that is on the opposite part of town from the train station . To get to Autogara 2 you take a local town bus or a taxi .

The bus to Brasov - Bran leaves you in front of the castle.

The trip takes about 5 hours one way .

It is definitely doable without a tour, and not that hard at all. Of course, tour guides will tell you otherwise :)

Hello,

The best way is to rent a car, it is far away more easy and you can enjoy better the trip. If you go to Bran Castle from Bucharest is nice to visit also Peles Castle and the Rasnov Fortress.

About Poenari Fortress:

1. Go by train from Gara de Nord to Curtea de Arges from here take a mini bus to Arefu (the bus station is quite near the train station), this bus is passing at 3 km from the Poenari Fortress, you can negotiate with the driver to pay the transport to there. The Taxi will be expensive.

2. You can also go to Curtea de Arges by bus from Militari Bus Station (you can arrive here by Metro - Pacii Station). Is faster. From Curtea de Arges do as i explained above.

If you go to Poenari try to visit the Vidraru Dam (5 km away from the fortress) and the Curtea de Arges Monastery.

If you go to Poenari Fortress don't miss the Vidraru Lake and the Curtea de Arges City, you must see them, are amazing places, convince yourself by watching few pictures:

Like others said before, is not impossible by public transport but try also to rent a car is easier.

Good luck!!
