Health Insurance for a Russain visitor to the UK

Hi there,

We've invited my Russian mother-in-law to visit us in the UK for almost 6 months. The UK Border Agency has just issued the entry visa which specifically states that she will not be covered for medical treatment under the National Health Service.

My mother-in-law is a Russian citizen, 72 years old and in good health. I'm seeking to purchase medical insurance solely for the 6 month period that she is visiting the UK.

Surely someone must have faced this problem before. I've searched the internet and spoken to four different insurance companies and cannot find any insurance product.

Any advice would be welcome please.

Thanks and best regards,

I am surprised as I have always thought that there was a reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and Russia. UK is one of the few countries which do NOT require a proof of medical insurance from Russian visa applicants.

But if it turns out she really needs one, then most Russians going abroad buy medical travel insurance from one of a gazillion Russian insurance companies (RESO, ROSNO, Ingosstrakh, URALSIB to name just a few) which usually costs as little as $1-2 per day (might be more for a 72 y.o.) and covers emergency medical treatment in a foreign country plus repatriation to Russia if needed.

Dear Marassa,

Many thanks for your message and advice. Most helpful and much appreciated.

My mother-in-law has never travelled outside of Russia before and I've arranged everything from the UK so far.

I'll ask her to enquire locally in Adygae, presumably via a Travel Agent?

Best regards,

Including the visa? Actually the most convenient way of buying insurance was from a host of insurance brokers besieging every consulate and visa center. But I guess it's too late for this. Here are some links to major insurance companies, you can compare the terms and pick one having an office close to where she lives. Obviously it's all in Russian but I would presume your spouse reads Russian?
