Original passports required for within-Russia train travel?

Daytrip SPb-Veliky Novgorod on RZD's Lastochka fast train. We have paper printouts of our internet-purchased train tickets. We also have good color photocopies of our US passports and originals of US drivers' licenses and student IDs. Can we bring the original passports instead of the photocopies would if that's not necessary would rather leave the passports under lock and key in SPb. Do we need the originals? We will not be able to check at the train station and return to our SPb lodging to pick up the originals if we do need them. Thanks in advance for any clear guidance.

Something in that query got garbled by a quirky touchpad but I think y'all get the drift.

For "Can we bring the original passports instead of the photocopies would if that's not necessary would rather leave the passports under lock and key in SPb."

read "Can we bring the photocopies instead of the original passports? If bringing the orginals is not necessary we would rather leave the passports under lock and key in SPb."

I have no personal experience with this Lastochka train but I believe it would be treated as a long-distance train with reserved seats, so passports will be checked. Passports are not checked on commuter trains.

Thanks. In that case, we'll bring them.

Follow-up to above -- I take it that for a day trip to Catherine's Palace via commuter rail, tickets to be purchaed at station, bringing only passport photocopies would be advised.
