Kiev tips

I'm not a first timer to Kiev. Going next week and looking forward to Pervak Restaurant and Golden Gate Irish Pub.

Is there a decent bar within easy walking distance of the Opera Hotel?

Weather wise do you suggest a Cashmere overcoat or cotton burberry mac?

PiecesOf8, yep, Viola’s a nice place :) so far :)

Re smoking ban in public places/buildings. Looks like I’ll surprise you by mentioning they actually made firsts attempts to introduce it here about 3-4 years ago. Say, the owners of restaurants, pubs etc are obliged to provide up to 50% of their area to non-smokers. Needless to say with no proper air venting system it’s totally useless.

And a year ago, municipal authorities in Kyiv have also officially (!) forbidden, except in the specially designed areas, smoking in recreation areas (parks, beaches, summer terraces, sports facilities), kindergartens and playgrounds, computer clubs and cinemas, at public transports’ stops and in 50m around them, in public pay phones, underground walkways, elevators, at the porches of multi-storey buildings, in churches and in 50m around them, in hostels, educational and health-care institutions, market and commerce establishments, governmental and municipal agencies and… in the offices – at desks and other working places!

Do I have to mention there’s a world of differences between law introduction and its implementation here? No one really cares if it’s preserved (except for my employer LOL) and I haven’t heard of any penalties imposed on violators.

Yes, officially casinos are still closed and the gambling ban remains valid. I even posted it in the FAQ section (Top questions) for Kyiv (to be found on the upper left corner of the page). And I haven’t heard of any progress in arranging local “Las Vegas’es” as initially intended. Some back-street places are said to be operating, but I wouldn’t advise tracing them.

Btw, once it’s a “Tips on Kyiv” thread, I feel like mentioning here that municipal authorities have also obliged all the cafes, restaurants etc in Kyiv to allow tourists in to use their restrooms without ordering anything. Has McD lost its monopoly here? ;)

Sorry, upper RIGHT corner, of course, is the place to look for Top Questions!
