Hi EastofEngland and welcome to Kyiv forum :)

>> Is this near to the centre of the city?

Yes, it’s close to the city centre, in a short drive up from Khreschatyk Street, if there are no traffic jams. Take a look on the google map at point (pin) A http://tinyurl.com/3oe4epv

>> What is the best way to get there?

It depends on where you are willing to get there FROM.

Closest metro station is Arsenal’na (ukr. Арсенальна). Here you can find the guidance on using metro in Kyiv tripadvisor.com/Travel-g294474-c124041/Kiev:…

From there, you can either walk (to your left) along Ivana Mazepy (ukr. Івана Мазепи, former Sichnevogo Povstannya) street, or cross the road and take a bus #24, a trolleybus #38 or any mini-bus that goes along Ivana Mazepy street.

Lavra is a huge complex, so you might also find this plan of Lavra helpful lifeglobe.net/media/entry/87/shemalavri_2.jpg And here is the legend to this plan (scroll down through the entire page) http://tinyurl.com/6dngyml

Have a nice trip!

Forgot to add that if you take public transport (bus or trolley) from Arsenal'na, Lavra is in two stops only.

My pleasure, EastofEngland :)

You still didn't mention your starting point, perhaps there are better ways for you to get there. Say, #24 bus can be caught on L'va Tolstogo Sq. and Khreschatyk St. (except mid-day on Mon to Fri and on week-end) and on European Square (any day).

Please, feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

We will not be coming 'til next year, but are thinking of staying here:-

Sherborne Guest House

9 Sichneviy Provulok, Kiev 01010, Ukraine

Found with your help that this is quite near the Lava, & I think walkable.

Ah, this is just a fantastic location for Lavra. Definitely walkable both to Lavra and to metro, should you plan to use it.

For Lavra, start from Slavy Sq. and walk along Mazepy Street till you see Lavra to your left. Or make one stop by bus/trolley; the bus/trolley stop is opposite Slavy Park.

And in front of Salyut hotel (easily recognisable by its shape http://www.salutehotel.kiev.ua/ ) on Slavy Sq., you will find a public transport stop in the opposite direction from Lavra, to downtown. You can take #24 to Khreshchatyk from there, or one of a few mini-buses to St.Sophia/St.Michael.

Again thanks, getting back from the Lava to downtown seems interesting.

If we take the bus #24 can we pay on the bus or do we have to buy ticket before getting on?

Also, for Mini Bus assume you pay on bus & do they run on a schedule or just wait 'til they are full?

From Lavra, walk back a little bit (towards Slavy Sq.) and you will see a stop by the hill; this is where you can catch bus or mini-buses to downtown. Don't take a trolley, it does not go there.

For mini-buses, just raise your hand (parallel to the ground) as if you are flagging down a cab, and it'll stop.

.

Mini-buses are all privately-owned. There's no schedule (except for the beginning and the end of working day), but they run pretty often. Only some wait till full and only on the end-stops (rarely also on some major stops like metro stations). In the middle of the rout, a mini-bus typically approaches the stop, lets passengers out/gets others in and moves on.

Payment is to the driver, when you enter the salon. But you can also enter, take a seat then pass money to the driver through other passengers.

Price for mini-buses differs depending on the length of their rout, but does not depend on the length of your ride (i.e you pay equally for one stop ride and for full length trip). Cost of ride in each particular mini-bus is written inside, usually above the driver's cabin (say, 2-00грн or 2-50грн).

Although required, mini-buses' drivers rarely (almost never) give you a ticket in return for your money. But they always carefully calculate how many people have paid.

In a mini-bus, you have to call your stop when the mini-bus approaches it. But if you need to leave on a popular stop, some other passengers will call it, and you can just leave. If no one calls a stop, and there are no people waiting outside, a mini-bus can pass without stopping.

.

Buses (all the same applies to trams and trolley-buses) are municipally-owned. They run on schedule. Normally they wait for a while on end-stops, but not in the middle of the rout.

Cost of ride in all Kyiv buses is presently the same: UAH 1-50. Kids under age of 7 ride free of charge.

You can either buy bus tickets (avtobusnyj kvytok - автобусний квиток) in a kiosk on the stop (if any), or pay on board (that’s what most people do).

Payment on board can be done to:

the conductor - a person (usually a mid-aged lady) who walks around the salon and collects fees from passengers in exchange for a ticket (always given!). Ticket must be punched to validate them. If the conductor does not punch a ticket for you, you must do it yourself. Punchers are placed inside the salon, either between the windows, or on the vertical hand-rails.

if the bus runs without conductor (bez konduktora - без кондуктора), payment is to the driver. There will be an opening in the driver’s cabin window where you put money and wait for the ticket. Again, don’t forget to punch the ticket.

Bus stops on each of its assigned stops, and you don’t have to call yours.

Hi there, As usual Cora has provided top info so nothing more to add on that, but just wanted to say if you are coming from the metro towards lavra you will go through the Eternal Glory Park. One of the sights in the park is the Holodmer museum and the memorial dedicated to the famine. The museum is underground and very poignant. Outside you will come across a statue of a girl with 5 sheaves of wheat in her hand which during the time of the famine would have been punishable by death. Definitely recommend stopping here for 1/2 hour. Its a big part of Ukraines history and I found it very interesting.

have a great trip
