Train from Moscow to Kiev?

Hi

I know there are direct lines running between Moscow and Kiev but can not find exact price and timetable online....

Anybody have reliable info regarding price and schedule,as updated as possible?

can tickets be easily bought in moscow (not online)2-4 days before departing?(i would most likely depart on 17th or 18th July) Are prices fixed and will availability be a problem? would online booking be possible and also a lot more expensive? what should one expect for a typical 3rd class ticket?

Hi Renee and welcome to Ukraine forum!

Have you looked at the web-sites of Russian (RZhD) and Ukrainian (UZ) Railways?

Time-table from UZ: http://tinyurl.com/7ox6b2c

Search tool for the time-table from RZhD (choose the desired date): eng.rzd.ru/schedulee/public/rzdeng…

Price differs substantially depending on the train you choose.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how easy it is to book in Moscow right before the departure – many Russians travel to Ukraine in summer, but mostly in the southern direction (Odessa, Simferopol etc).

Say, right now I can still see in UZ on-line database lots of tickets (including 3rd class) available for different Msc-Kyiv trains for Jul 18. By the way, this is where you can check the rates, too (and book on-line, if you wish):

http://booking.uz.gov.ua/en/ (in hryvnya, divide by 8 to see the USD equivalent).

As for what to expect from a 3rd class ticket, have a look at this article of mine on Train travel in Ukraine: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g294473-c131482/Ukrai…

Make sure you take a good care of your personal belongings safety if travelling 3rd class.

Or this train goes throught Russia than Ukraine.

Hi Sylvain,

No, it must have been Kyiv-St.Petersburg train that you've heard about. It, indeed, goes via Belarus, and those not eligible for visa-free arrival should obtain transit Belarus visa.

This is not the case with Kyiv-Moscow trains. They do not pass via Belarus.

Hi Renee,

This is quite simple with the nice Web site of the Russian railways: http://pass.rzd.ru/main-pass/public/en.

Buy your electronic ticket online with Credit Card. For Kiev to Moscow, I recommend to use Train n°5 in first class luxury (for a cost of about 200 USD one way) running at 21:57. The train does not go through Belarus but straight into Ukraine at the Suzemka border crossing. It is very nice.

So buy you ticket online, print the receipt, then in Moscow go to Kievskaya Vokzal (Kiev station) before travel and on the right side of the building retrieve your physical ticket from vending machine. There is helpful personnel.

I have done it several times. It is nice and easy.
